23 Oct Benefits of Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning, also called a dermaplane facial, is a safe and highly effective procedure for physical exfoliation of the skin. This procedure involves the use of a surgical scalpel and gentle shaving of the skin’s surface. With dermaplaning, the top layer of dead skin cells is removed along with vellus hair (peach fuzz).
Dermaplaning is performed in around 30 minutes in the MedSpa setting, and there is no downtime afterwards. Most clients have the procedure every 4-6 weeks, and it is not used to shape eyebrows. The nose is avoided with this procedure as well.
Benefit #1: Physical Exfoliation
Dermaplaning is a means of physical exfoliation. With exfoliation, the cell regeneration process is triggered, and this allows skincare products to better penetrate the skin. After a dermaplane facial, the top layer of skin cells is removed, and the skin below is fresh and youthful looking.
Benefit #2: Removal of Fine Hairs
Dermaplaning is excellent for removal of excess fine hairs on the face, which can accumulate oil and dirt. Contrary to popular growth, vellus hair will not grow back darker and thicker. Removal of fine hairs leaves you with smooth, silky skin without the aggravation of swelling and redness.
Benefit #3: Brighter, Healthier Skin
Exfoliation of dead skin cells along with removal of vellus hair results in brighter, healthier skin that has a smooth feel and look. Dermaplaning is a good procedure to even out skin tone. The natural skin tone changes over time because of sun damage, and dermaplaning restores more evenness to the complexion’s tone.
Benefit #4: Safe and Effective for Mature Skin
For dry and rough skin textures, dermaplaning helps minimize the superficial appearance of uneven skin tone. It is also useful for mature skin that has a slow turnover of dead skin cells. Because there are no chemical agents, there is no risk of medication interactions.
Benefit #5: Elimination of Fine Wrinkles
A dermaplane facial cannot remove deep wrinkles, but it is effective at eliminating fine lines that develop over time. The wrinkles in the skin are removed during the dermaplaning procedure, which creates a smooth complexion that can last for up to 6 months.
Benefit #6: Very Little Risks
A sharp surgical blade is used for the dermaplaning procedure. While rare, nicks can occur on uneven skin. However, there are no risk of infection, scarring, and reaction. Most people have no problems during and after the dermaplane facial.
Benefit #7: It is Long-Lasting
Because the dermaplane facial removes up to 3 weeks of dead skin cells that accumulate over time, dermaplaning will effectively last for a month before another procedure is needed. With good maintenance of the skin at home, the time between dermaplane facials can be 4-8 weeks.
Benefit #8: It makes other Procedures More Effective
Many skincare specialists like to perform dermaplaning before other procedures. A dermaplane facial can potentiate the effects of micro-needling, which involves use of a special pen or roller device that uses tiny needles to puncture the skin. Also called dermarolling, this procedure stimulates collagen production for a plumper, fuller look. Another procedure often done after dermaplaning is the chemical peel. Because the top layer of skin cells is scraped away, the chemical agent will penetrate the skin better after dermaplaning.
